A Moment in My Week as a Counsellor – Friday Reflections
Jul 04, 2025✨ Introducing “A Moment in My Week as a Counsellor - Friday Reflections” ✨
Each Friday on my facebook and Instagram pages, I’ll be sharing small, honest glimpses from my counselling space - stories, insights, and reflections that reveal what’s showing up in the hearts and nervous systems of the people I’m privileged to walk alongside.
These moments are gentle invitations to pause, reflect, and remember you’re not alone on your journey.
Theme: Self-Worth & Productivity
Can I share something that’s been echoing through the counselling space this week?
It’s the quiet, heavy theme of self-worth - and how often we’ve been taught to tether it to our productivity.
Client after client brought it in different ways: the pressure to keep going, the guilt that arises when resting, the deep fear that stopping means becoming irrelevant… or failing.
One client paused and whispered through tears,
✨ “What if my exhaustion isn’t a weakness… but a sign of how much I’ve carried?”
Yes. That.
That sentence held the whole week.
Because it isn’t weakness.
It’s your nervous system signalling that it’s been in survival mode for too long, without enough space to just be.
And if we could translate what the survival part of the nervous system is trying to say, it might sound something like:
💬 “I’ve been working so hard to keep you safe. I didn’t know it was okay to rest. I thought if you stopped, everything would fall apart. I’ve been bracing, holding, pushing… because I believed I had to. I’m exhausted too.”
I know this struggle well - this tying of self-worth to productivity has been a big part of my own burnout cycles over the years, and my healing journey has been about learning to rest into a deep sense of enoughness.
When we can meet that part with compassion rather than shame, something beautiful begins to shift.
We come back into connection- with ourselves, and with a felt sense of safety that says:
🌿 “You are worthy. Not because of what you do. But because you are here, breathing, existing. And that is enough.”
So if you’re holding a lot right now, may this be a gentle invitation to listen inward.
To honour what you’ve been carrying.
And to offer that part of you a moment of relief.
With Warmth,
Kate
