Creating Space for Transformation Through Counselling
Dec 15, 2024The following story is shared with care, compassion, and a deep respect for the transformative journey of healing. While the name and some identifying details have been changed to protect privacy and confidentiality, the heart of the experience remains true.
In sharing Angela's story, I aim to honour the courage it takes to seek support, reflect on one’s struggles, and embrace change. Angela’s journey is a testament to the power of self-awareness, vulnerability, and the tools we can cultivate to move through burnout toward balance and well-being.
From Burnout to Balance: Angela's Path to Renewal
Angela, a 39-year-old corporate manager and mother of two young children, entered counselling seeking help for burnout.
Balancing the demands of a high-pressure job with the responsibilities of motherhood had left Angela feeling depleted, anxious, and stuck in a cycle of constant busyness. She hoped therapy would help her restore her energy, strengthen her emotional resilience, and learn how to make herself a priority without guilt.
For years, Angela had put everyone else’s needs above her own. The stress began to take a toll on her physical health, manifesting as frequent headaches, insomnia, and a nagging sense of exhaustion that no amount of rest could shake. She struggled to be present for her children and felt disconnected from the joy she once found in her work and family life. Angela’s goal for counselling was clear: to learn how to care for herself so she could thrive both at home and in the workplace.
The Breakthrough Moments
During therapy, Angela experienced three significant realisations that marked the turning points in her journey:
- Self-care is essential, not selfish: Angela reframed her long-held belief that prioritising herself was neglecting others. She came to understand that by taking care of her own well-being, she could show up as a better mother, partner, and leader.
- Small changes make a big difference: Angela embraced micro-practices, such as dedicating 10 minutes to mindful breathing each morning and setting firm boundaries to protect her evenings for family time. These small yet consistent actions created a ripple effect of positive change.
- The power of saying no: Therapy empowered Angela to confidently say no to additional work commitments and delegate tasks both at home and in the office. By doing so, she created more space for rest and rejuvenation.
A New Path Forward
Over time, Angela’s progress was profound. She began carving out "me time" each week for activities she loved, such as yoga and reading, which helped her reconnect with herself. She developed a morning routine that included mindfulness and reflection, allowing her to start each day with clarity and calmness. Angela also noticed significant improvements in her relationships. By becoming more present and engaged, she deepened her connections with her children and spouse.
When counselling ended, Angela was in a far better place emotionally, physically, and mentally. She had implemented sustainable practices that kept her balanced and was optimistic about her ability to handle future challenges. With newfound energy and confidence, Angela felt empowered to live a life that honoured her needs and values, both at work and at home.
