The Story of Safety
Like any compelling narrative, our journey toward authenticity has a beginning, middle, and end. But unlike traditional stories, this one is constantly being rewritten as we grow and heal. When we feel safe, we become the protagonists of our own story rather than supporting characters reacting to circumstances.
Think about the last time you felt completely at ease – maybe it was with a trusted friend, in a peaceful setting, or during an activity that brought you joy. In these moments, your authentic self naturally emerges, unencumbered by the weight of survival responses.
Understanding Our Nervous System's Language
Our nervous system is like an internal compass, constantly scanning our environment and relationships for signs of safety or danger. It's an ancient system, one that's been refined over millions of years, but sometimes it can get stuck in patterns that no longer serve us.
When we understand the three states of our nervous system, we begin to recognize our own patterns:
- Ventral State: Our safe and social state, where we feel connected, creative, and calm. This is where our authentic self naturally emerges, where we can play, rest, and truly connect with others.
- Sympathetic State: Our mobilised fight-or-flight response, where we feel anxious, overwhelmed, or ready to take action. Here, our authentic self takes a back seat to survival.
- Dorsal State: Our immobilised shutdown response, where we feel numb, disconnected, or unable to engage. In this state, our true self becomes hidden beneath layers of protection.
