Nourishing Your Nervous System Through Somatic Movement, Restorative Yoga & Counselling
Nov 13, 2023Returning to Yourself: Soothing the Nervous System
In the fast pace of modern life, many of us are living from the neck up — thinking, planning, pushing through — while our nervous systems quietly carry the load.
Stress doesn’t just live in our minds. It lives in our muscles, our breath, our sleep, our digestion, our sense of safety in the world.
And over time, without gentle tending, the body begins to whisper… then nudge… then insist that something needs attention.
The good news?
There are deeply nurturing, evidence-informed ways to support your nervous system back into balance.
Let me introduce you to three practices I weave together in my work.
Somatic Movement: Listening to the Body’s Wisdom
Somatic movement is not about performance or fitness. It’s about attunement.
Through slow, mindful movement, we begin to tune into sensation — noticing tension, ease, contraction, expansion. We allow the body to guide rather than override it.
This process:
-
Releases stored physical and emotional tension
-
Rebuilds trust between mind and body
-
Supports nervous system regulation
-
Restores a felt sense of safety
Somatic work gently reminds us: your body is not the problem — it’s part of the solution.
Restorative Yoga: The Art of Deep Rest
Restorative yoga is a practice of intentional stillness. Using supportive props such as bolsters and blankets, the body is fully held — allowing the nervous system to downshift out of survival mode.
When the body feels supported, the breath softens.
When the breath softens, the nervous system begins to settle.
Restorative yoga:
-
Activates the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) response
-
Reduces chronic stress activation
-
Encourages mindful presence
-
Supports deep physical and emotional repair
In a culture that rewards productivity, choosing rest can feel radical.
But rest is not laziness — it is medicine.
Counselling: Making Space for the Emotional Landscape
While movement and stillness support the body, counselling creates space for the stories, emotions, and experiences the body has been holding.
Through a trauma-informed, nervous system-aware approach, we gently explore:
-
How your past experiences shaped your stress responses
-
The protective strategies your system developed to survive
-
Ways to build safety, stability, and self-trust
When counselling is integrated with somatic practices, healing becomes holistic. We work both top-down (through reflection and insight) and bottom-up (through embodied regulation).
It is not about fixing you.
It is about supporting your system to feel safe enough to heal.
1:1 Sessions & Women’s Circles: A Space to Land
I offer personalised 1:1 sessions and intimate women’s circles for those longing to reconnect with their bodies and restore nervous system balance.
In 1:1 Sessions
You receive tailored support specific to your history, your stress patterns, and your goals. We move at your pace — gently, respectfully, collaboratively.
In Women’s Circles
There is something profoundly regulating about safe community. Sitting in circle reminds the nervous system that we are not alone. Shared stories soften shame. Presence becomes medicine.
Both spaces weave together somatic movement, restorative practices, and therapeutic support in a grounded, compassionate way.
An Invitation
Caring for your nervous system is not indulgent — it is foundational.
When we learn to listen inwardly, to honour the body’s cues, and to create space for both rest and reflection, something begins to shift. We move from survival into steadiness. From bracing into belonging.
If you feel called to explore these practices — whether through counselling, restorative yoga, somatic movement, or circle — I would love to connect.
