The power of restorative pauses & filling your cup first
Feb 22, 2024Let's talk about the importance of restorative pauses and going slow in our lives. Life can be a whirlwind, right? With all the hustle and bustle, it's easy to forget to take a step back and recharge. But trust me, it's crucial.
First things first, set boundaries around your self-care. If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's okay to say no. It's okay to take a break. It's okay to prioritise your well-being. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup.
Knowing when it's time to step back from the old, from engagement, is key to getting your balance back. When we're out of balance, all kinds of stuff goes on; we're stressed, we're overwhelmed, we're reactive. But when we are able to centre ourselves from within, whether it's through meditation, exercise, or just tending to the things that you like to do each day - for me, it can literally be 10 minutes outside with a tree, watering the garden and breathing - it can be so many different, simple things.
So, observe your state and keep an eye on yourself, especially if you're someone who is helping a lot of people right now. The collective has gone through a really rough couple of years, and we're still coming out of it. Make sure you're looking after yourself and filling yourself back up, especially if you're someone who is very used to giving to others.
Remember, it's okay to slow down. It's okay to take a moment for yourself. It's okay to rest. You deserve it. So, take a deep breath, and give yourself permission to pause. Your well-being is worth it.
Nourishing ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually is essential for overall well-being. Here are some ways you can do just that:
1. Physical Nourishment:
- Eat a balanced diet: Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats into your meals.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body functioning optimally.
- Get moving: Engage in regular physical activity that you enjoy, whether it's walking, dancing, yoga, swimming or any other form of exercise.
- Prioritise sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to rest and recharge.
- Relaxation: Finding ways to relax the physical body such as deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation can help lower stress hormones like cortisol, leading to a calmer mind, a soothed nervous system and reduced feelings of anxiety.
2. Emotional Nourishment:
- Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and treat yourself with the same understanding and empathy you would offer to a friend.
- Connect with loved ones: Spend time with family and friends who support and uplift you.
- Engage in hobbies: Pursue activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, whether it's painting, gardening, or playing an instrument.
- Seek therapy or counselling: If you're struggling with emotional challenges and overwhelm, consider seeking professional support to help you navigate your feelings.
3. Spiritual Nourishment:
- Practice mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness meditation or other mindfulness practices to cultivate awareness and presence.
- Connect with nature: Spend time outdoors and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
- Explore your beliefs: Reflect on your values and beliefs, and engage in practices that align with your spiritual or philosophical views.
- Practice gratitude: Cultivate a sense of gratitude for the blessings in your life, no matter how small.
Another level of nourishment you can give yourself is nourishing your soul and engaging in self-inquiry are crucial aspects of holistic well-being. Here are some ways you can nourish your soul and engage in self-inquiry:
4. Soul Nourishment:
- Connect with your inner self: Spend time in quiet reflection or meditation to connect with your inner wisdom and intuition.
- Engage in activities that bring you joy: Whether it's listening to music, reading poetry, or spending time in nature, do things that uplift your spirit. Give yourself permission to turn up the joy in your life!
- Practice gratitude: Cultivate a sense of gratitude for the beauty and abundance in your life, and express appreciation for the people and experiences that bring you joy.
- Explore your spiritual beliefs: Reflect on your beliefs and values, and explore practices that resonate with your spiritual or philosophical views.
- Seek inspiration: Surround yourself with people, books, and experiences that inspire and uplift you.
5. Self-Inquiry:
- Reflect on your values and priorities: Take time to reflect on what matters most to you and how you want to live your life.
- Question your assumptions: Challenge your beliefs and assumptions about yourself and the world around you, and be open to new perspectives.
- Practice self-awareness: Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and notice patterns or habits that may be holding you back.
- Cultivate curiosity: Approach life with a sense of curiosity and wonder, and be open to learning and growth.
- Seek support: Engage in conversations with trusted friends, mentors, or counselors who can help you explore your inner world and gain insights into yourself.
Soul nourishment and self-inquiry are ongoing processes that require patience, curiosity, and openness. By nurturing your soul and engaging in self-inquiry, you can deepen your understanding of yourself, cultivate inner peace, and live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
Remember, nourishing yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually is an ongoing process. It's about finding what works for you and making self-care a priority in your daily life. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle life's challenges and live a more fulfilling and nourished life.
